We really like the stock EQ plugins that come with Pro Tools, as well as those in Izotope Ozone 6 (especially the dynamic EQ pictured below).

Want to get a crash course on mixing from an industry icon? Bobby Owsinski’s audio mixing bootcamp is well worth your time.
Lynda.com offers a free trial and you can check this comprehensive tutorial at no cost. There are a ton of other great tutorials on the recording process, including an excellent class on mastering by Owsinski. If you decide to stay with the site, it’s only $24.99 for month-by-month (or lower if you commit to longer time periods).
Just a touch of compression on your mix buss (master fader) can bring cohesion and glue to your mix. It’s another of those foundational elements in any solid mix.
Here is another in the “5 Minutes to a Better Mix” series, from The Recording Revolution…
Here are a couple of our favorite Halloween songs…
Origin of Supernatural Probabilities – Tangerine Dream
This is a full album of creepy awesomeness from earlier this year from Geoff Barrow of Portishead:
What are some of your favorites for All Hallows Eve?
If you’ve never heard it, Vincent Price’s full voiceover for Michael Jackson’s thriller is awesome! You can hear the bleed from his earphones.
Happy Halloween!
Magic Ears is a huge fan of Graham Cochrane and the Recording Revolution. His tips will absolutely make you better at mixing.
We’re going to post many of his tips right here in The Mix Up. We’ve been posting them on our Facebook page for more than a month and a lot of people have thanked us. Here is the first of his “5 Minutes to a Better Mix” series. It is about proper gain staging. When building a mix, it is crucial to have a solid foundation.
Gain staging is the first step in creating that foundation.

Check out this special tribute to Edgar Froese, electronic music icon and mastermind of TANGERINE DREAM. Edgar passed away earlier this year, but his legacy lives on. My iOS music-making buddies, Thomas Globotom Albertsen and Martin Neuhold are among the artists on the FREE album!

I’ve noticed that I can drive some of my channel faders into the red, but not the master buss. Everything sounds great, but I wonder if something is happening to the sound that I cannot obviously hear. I’ve done A-B comparisons many times and have concluded that if I am not hearing clip distortion, then it’s not there (or it’s working in the mix).
Modern Mixing has an interesting read on the phenomenon. Check it out. It might help keep you from driving yourself nuts making sure that nothing clips, even though it sounds good.
We’re going to use this blog in many ways. One way will be to share interesting articles that will help improve your mixing skills or learn more about the art and craft of mixing.
