With the weekend upon us, let’s take a timeout from the mixing and mastering just to talk about music.
If you are like me, you love and listen to all kinds of music. But when it comes to the music we make, there are bands, artists and styles that influence us more than others.
I used to be heavy into spoken word and percussion, with influences that included Gil Scott-Heron and The Last Poets. I had two bands that did quite well in my hometown with that formula.
Here is a live radio performance by The Weeds.
However, in the past few years, I have been creating experimental music and sounds with the iPad. When the iPad’s operating system is stable, the possibilities for it as an expressive musical device seem endless.
I talk in depth about my experiences making music with the iPad in an interview with Abel Folgar at New Times Broward Palm Beach last year just before a release party for my first solo album, “Refractions & Echoes.”
What led me to getting more experimental, ambient and noisy were the Krautrock bands of the late 60s and early 70s. Bands such as CAN, Cluster, NEU!, Faust, Tangerine Dream and many others captured my attention and imagination and took me in an entirely new direction.
So what bands are doing it for you these days? What kind of music is influencing you?
I’d love to hear from you, as I am a voracious consumer of music and am always interested in hearing something different. One of my favorite things about running Magic Ears is that moment when I hear something new and great for the first time. I get so jazzed when I think, “wow, I get to mix and master THIS!”
Have a great weekend!
